Wicca Symbols Explained

Wicca symbols and other pagan designs have been with mankind for thousands of years. Today they are still used by witches to focus energy during rituals or to concentrate upon a specific element or deity. Rooted in the dynamics of our planet and solar system, wicca symbols and beliefs are a rich inheritance from our ancestors. There are many wicca symbols, here are the basic ones.

celticpentThe most powerful of the wicca symbols is of course the pentacle. Made up of a combination of the wicca symbols for the five elements – earth, water, fire, air and spirit – the pentacle thus created is enclosed inside a unifying circle. Of all the wicca symbols the pentacle offers the most powerful protection when worn on the person, the power of which can be further enhanced by the choice of metal used for the pentacle. If the pentacle is made of silver you will invoke the added protection of the moon goddess and if of gold of the sun god.

Other wicca symbols include the spirit circle which has two crossing four pointed arrows within a circle which also represents the five elements.

The wicca symbols of the triple moon and the horned god are often used to represent and therefore connect with female and male deities respectively. Sometimes known as the goddess, the depiction of the triple moon is of a full moon between two crescent moons. Representing birth, life and death the lunar month of course also reflects the duration of the human menstrual cycle. The horned god, sometimes referred to by his Celtic name of Cernunnos is represented by a circle surmounted by a pair of horns in the shape of an upturned crescent. Used to represent nature or a male deity, when used in conjunction with the triple moon these wicca symbols are a strong representation of the complimentary power of opposites.

One of the more familiar wicca symbols is the interlocking ovals of infinity still used today in science and math. Often seen on Thor’s hammer pendants worn during Viking times and on ancient carvings this again represents past, present and future, the never ending circle of life.

The septagram or seven pointed star is the final one of the basic wicca symbols. Representing the seven days of the week and the then known astrological bodies – Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. each point of the star can be used during ritual to focus the energies of that planet in a similar way that the points of a pentacle can be used to focus the energies of the earth’s elements.

Preview – Glass Goddess Bead Pendants

Glass Goddess Bead Pendants are coming next week. These are handmade by Louise Ingram of Ontario Canada. She is an artisan working in a craft called Lampwork.

The glass is melted and wrapped around a stainless steel mandrel (rod) that has been coated with release so that the bead will slide off once it is finished and cooled. During the process of making the beads, stress builds up inside the glass which could cause the beads to crack at some point. In order to release this stress all the beads are annealed in a kiln, this means they are kept at a high temperature for a length of time to allow the glass to relax. They are then cooled very slowly ensuring quality and strength.

Layers of coloured glass are added and shaped.
Here are the steps Louise takes to create a goddess like the one shown here.

  • melt ivory glass around mandrel
  • shape glass into ‘drop’ shape for pendant
  • apply silver foil, burnish and burn into glass
  • apply black colour for goddess body
  • apply murrini (patterned glass) on top of black
  • rake body to create curved shape
  • create arms with more glass
  • add head with a dot of black
  • add special silver glass topped with clear to create a trapped bubble between arms

At that point she goes into the kiln.

Goddess Bead Pendants make wonderful jewellery but can also be made into an amulet.

The price for one of these beautiful handcrafted Goddesses will be $36.95 complete with glazed cotton cord to hang it on.
