Preview – Glass Goddess Bead Pendants
Glass Goddess Bead Pendants are coming next week. These are handmade by Louise Ingram of Ontario Canada. She is an artisan working in a craft called Lampwork.
The glass is melted and wrapped around a stainless steel mandrel (rod) that has been coated with release so that the bead will slide off once it is finished and cooled. During the process of making the beads, stress builds up inside the glass which could cause the beads to crack at some point. In order to release this stress all the beads are annealed in a kiln, this means they are kept at a high temperature for a length of time to allow the glass to relax. They are then cooled very slowly ensuring quality and strength.
Layers of coloured glass are added and shaped.
Here are the steps Louise takes to create a goddess like the one shown here.
- melt ivory glass around mandrel
- shape glass into ‘drop’ shape for pendant
- apply silver foil, burnish and burn into glass
- apply black colour for goddess body
- apply murrini (patterned glass) on top of black
- rake body to create curved shape
- create arms with more glass
- add head with a dot of black
- add special silver glass topped with clear to create a trapped bubble between arms
At that point she goes into the kiln.
Goddess Bead Pendants make wonderful jewellery but can also be made into an amulet.
The price for one of these beautiful handcrafted Goddesses will be $36.95 complete with glazed cotton cord to hang it on.
