During one of our Esbats this year we got to talking about Deity and which of us worships a particular Pantheon or Deity and which of us worships a Lord and Lady with no particular Pantheon in mind. I don’t know that anyone believes that it’s either right or wrong either way but it made for a good discussion. Some Wiccans have a patron God/Goddess while others will work with a pantheon of Gods. Some do not give names to the God and Goddess, or simply refer to them as the Lord and Lady.
One question was whether one is more successful in spellcraft if one calls upon a particular God or Goddess or if calling upon the Lord and Lady works equally well. It was remarked by a member of our coven that if your house were on fire would you get help faster running out into the street yelling “Fire!” or calling the Fire Dept.? Perhaps calling a particular Deity to help you would make more sense? It’s something to think about.
Another question that always comes up is how do you choose which Pantheon or Deities to worship? Some of us believe that all Gods are one God, just a different aspect or facet of the same God. Others believe that each God and Goddess is unique and individual, meaning that there are many Gods not many faces. So how do you choose?
I think the difficulty with choosing is the reason so many of us worship the generic Lord and Lady rather than a particular God or Goddess.

Difficulty choosing - I don’t believe that the individual chooses. I do, however, believe they are chosen. The problem lies in shutting down the childish inner voice that demands some sort of romantic deity image and actually listening, watching and understanding which deity has CHOSEN the individual. Not the other way around.
To complicate matters even further? Not everyone is chosen. Some people are simply not ready for a real spiritual experience; they are still too busy running around playing at being a Pagan/Witch or whatever.

Perhaps they are chosen but are too busy to listen?
Being chosen by the gods has much truth in it. I believe you’re right.
